How do “newcomers” organise themselves in a diverse city? How do they cherish their ethnic-cultural identity in a dynamic context? How do they relate to their immediate surroundings, the local authorities and the professional facilities? And how do people without a migrant background look at these associations? Bert Anciaux, senator and sp.a political group leader, refers to the many local “grassroots organisations” in Flanders and Brussels that give people a place for their own language, culture and identity.
